4th Grade Reading

We learned about Haiku poems today!  It is a traditional poem from Japan.  They have 3 lines.  The first has 5 syllables, the second has 7 syllables and the last also has 5 syllables.  Here are a few of our creations.

Nathaniel is fun
Nathaniel is the greatest
Nathaniel loves school

It is Halloween
You will go trick or treating
The fun is over

Leaves are falling down
The sky is blue and has clouds
Autumn is awesome

What is up with you?
My name is Summer, OK
Soccer is cool

Bel Air is awesome
Friends are at school with you
The teachers are nice

Minions
They are yellow things
They speak a different language
They talk really fast

Bel Air is my school
Bel Air is the greatest school
Bel Air is awesome

Fluency
Students should have brought home a story summary called Grandfather's Journey.  This is for them to read to home for fluency practice.  Please spend about 5 minutes rereading this passage, out loud, a few days per week.
In school we do "duet" reading.  The teacher reads the first word, the student the second word, teacher the third word and so on.  At the end of a short section, switch roles.  The student goes first and the teacher is second.  Then read the whole section together. Last the student reads it on their own.  The teacher gets to push the pace for the student.  Forcing them to keep up and read faster.
Think of fun, different ways to reread the story and watch them get better at reading it each time.  This will also build their confidence as a reader.  Practice fluency for short periods of time to keep it short and fun.
Here is an article on the importance of fluency:
