Fluency
Students should have brought home a story summary called The Ballad of Mulan. This is for them to read to home for fluency practice. Please spend about 5 minutes rereading this passage, out loud, a few days per week.
In school we do "duet" reading. The teacher reads the first word, the student the second word, teacher the third word and so on. At the end of a short section, switch roles. The student goes first and the teacher is second. Then read the whole section together. Last the student reads it on their own. The teacher gets to push the pace for the student. Forcing them to keep up and read faster.
Think of fun, different ways to reread the story and watch them get better at reading it each time. This will also build their confidence as a reader. Practice fluency for short periods of time to keep it short and fun.
